STUDENTS DONATE $3,000 to Horizons

Horizons of Friendship Executive Director Patricia Rebolledo has announced a donation to the work of Horizons from students at a local school.

A cheque for $ 3000 was presented last Friday at Trinity College School to Ms. Rebolledo by the Trinity International Development Education (TIDE) committee. The presentation by this year ’s head of TIDE , Ted Gorsline and by committee member Emily Gondosch was the culmination of the TIDE committee’s efforts earlier this year. The students’ successful fundraising dinner enjoyed the support, not just of the student body, but of many members of the Port Hope and Cobourg business community through donations of valuable goods and services for door prizes and draws at TIDE’s Charity dinner.

In her remarks to the assembled student body, Ms. Rebolledo thanked the organizers for the donation and recalled how the news had brought special cheers from the Northumberland delegation during Horizons’ recent exposure tour for supporters to El Salvador. Ms. Rebolledo described the founding of Horizons 30 years ago thanks to the volunteer work of three volunteers from the county. She particularly highlighted the current work of Horizons’ partners in the South confronting water and food shortages in areas devastated by Hurricane Mitch and by earthquakes and drought. Also outlined were ongoing projects in literacy, mental health, gender training and micro – credit to assist some of most impoverished communities in Central America. Ms. Rebolledo invited the students to learn more about Horizons of Friendship’s ’ development work in the South and informed them about an upcoming tour to Honduras in October being organized by Horizons’ community outreach coordinator, Jessica Farrias.
