Globalization, Latin America and Humanity
A 5-part video and discussion series that will explore the effects of capitalist-led globalization on the people of Latin America.
Every Thursday starting July, 17th, 7pm @ Horizons of Friendship, 50 Covert Street, Cobourg.

July 17- “Bread and Roses”
Staring the 2003 Oscar-winner, Adrien Brody. This is a film about Mexican migrant workers forming a union in California; it is fast-paced, emotional and inspiring.

July 24- “Men with Guns”
A Jon Sayles film that chronicles a wealthy doctor, living a sheltered life in an unnamed Latin American country, who takes a journey into the countryside and discovers the horror and oppression facing the Indigenous communities.

July 31- “Testimony: The Maria Guardado Story”
Maria Guardado was an activist in her country of El Salvador during the civil war of the 1980’s. She had to flee to Los Angeles after being kidnapped and tortured by the death squads. The film chronicles her return to her country in 2000 for the twentieth anniversary of the assassination of the Archbishop Oscar Romero.

August 7- “Life and Debt: Jamaica and the IMF”
This is Stephanie Black’s award-winning documentary. The International Monetary Fund lends money to developing countries, but only under certain conditions; free-markets, open borders for trade and privatization of publicly owned services.

August 21- “Chavez: Inside the Coup”
This film showcases how Hugo Chavez was thrown out of office for 24-hours in the first Latin American coup of this century. This film chronicles his dramatic return to office.
