Exposure Tour group returns from Honduras
(Cobourg, Ont) A group of nine people, residents of Ontario have returned from a 10-day tour to Honduras the poorest country in Central America. The trip was organized by Horizons of Friendship, a Canadian non-profit organization located in Cobourg that supports community development projects in Central America and Mexico. This educational and cultural exposure tour commemorated the 30th anniversary of Horizons of Friendship.
The trip provided an excellent opportunity for travelers to learn first-hand how Horizons of Friendship works with local organizations. These organizations are implementing a wide variety of projects that specialize in the areas of marginalized youth, women’s rights and rural agricultural development. Travelers had a chance to interact for 10-days with communities that are working hard to overcome poverty and injustice and that benefit from Canadian support. According to Greg Hancock, Cobourg, Ontario resident and tour participant: “The tour was valuable as it confirmed that the money raised by Horizons is going to very worthwhile projects.”
The tour also included cultural visits to places like the Mayan ruins at Copan, a world heritage site of major archeological importance. Expressing himself about the overall tour, Mr. Hancock said: “I felt I had been on two trips. One was the adventure holiday, and the other was meeting people of Honduras and hearing of their hopes and concerns, yet the trips merged together into a unique experience.”
Horizons of Friendship will share images and testimonies from this trip with the general public through a photo exhibit. The exhibit will be displayed at their office located on 50 Covert Street on December 10th, the International Day for Human Rights. Everyone is invited.
For those interested in traveling with Horizons of Friendship, another tour will leave to Costa Rica and Panama in February of 2004. For more information about this tour, please contact Jessica Farias at (905) 372-5483 ext. 24 or by email at jfarias@horizons.ca.
