CANADIAN SPEAKING TOUR

GILBERT GONZALEZ MAROTO
Representative of the Indigenous Brunca People, Puntarenas, Costa Rica

Gilbert Gonzalez Maroto is a proud member of the Brunca indigenous nation whose territories are located in the South region of Buenos Aires in the province of Puntarenas, Costa Rica.

Gilbert is an active member of ARADIKES a non-governmental organization that represents four indigenous groups (The Bri Bri, Brunca, Cabecares and Teribes) in six territories of the Buenos Aires area. ARADIKES’s mission is to strengthen indigenous communities in the struggle to defend their rights through grass-roots associations. ARADIKES also strives to promote environmental conservation and micro-enterprise economic development. Many of their programs are directed at indigenous farmers whose ancestral tradition includes maintaining forest areas so they can provide raw materials for crafts, medicinal plants and other resources.

Gilbert is also a founder of the Centre for Indigenous Development (CEDIN) in Costa Rica. The centre uses new communications technology to facilitate information exchange and networking and by doing so, helps to articulate indigenous issues and supports democratization.

During his visit to Canada, Gilbert will speak about the historical and cultural legacy of indigenous groups in southern Costa Rica. He will also address current challenges faced by these communities such as a proposed hydro-electrical dam, a project directly connected to the “Plan Puebla Panama”. If constructed, the dam will cause massive displacement and inundate several indigenous villages in the area, including the complete devastation of the community of Rey Curre. Gilbert hopes to raise awareness in Canada about the negative human and environmental implications of this project.

Horizons of Friendship is a Canadian non-profit international development organization committed to eliminating the root causes of poverty and injustice through cooperation of people from the South and the North. Horizons supports Central American and Mexican partner organizations that undertake local initiatives and implement community development projects. ARADIKES is one of Horizons’ partner organizations in Costa Rica. By hosting and organizing speaking tours with our partners, we seek to motivate Canadians to be active regarding global issues.

Gilbert will be visiting the cities of Cobourg, Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto and London, Ontario from March 20 to April 1, 2004.
