The Promised Ship

In the 1920s, Marcus Garvey, the leader of the massive black power movement of the early 20th century, founded a steamship line intended to transport black people back across the Atlantic to their ancestral homelands. In this documentary, the old townspeople of Limón, on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, recall the emotional impact this venture had on them and their parents, although it never came to fruition.

For Immediate Release

(Cobourg, ON) Horizons of Friendship, a Canadian charitable international development organization that supports community development projects in Central America and Mexico (Mesoamerica) would like to acknowledge Northumberland United Way for its recent contribution of $3,800 to support Horizons of Friendship’s community initiatives.

This is the first time Horizons of Friendship has received a grant through the United Way’s community venture one-year funds.

One of the objectives of Horizons of Friendship is to raise awareness in Canada of the challenges faced by people in the Mesoamerican region. Through the Community Outreach Program, we organize a series of activities that encourage an understanding of international development. We inform and engage citizens, allowing them to see local issues from a global perspective.

The grant received from United Way will be used to enhance and expand the educational materials of Horizons’ community resource centre. This resource centre is open to members of the community and specializes in various international themes and news. The money will go to purchase videos, publications and other materials.

Thanks to the new grant, Horizons of Friendship will begin its annual summer video series, starting this Thursday, July 29th at 6:00 pm. The goal of the video series is to provide an opportunity for people in Northumberland to view international documentaries, and reflect on issues affecting populations beyond our local borders.

The first documentary to be presented is the award-winning Peruvian film, “Choropamapa: The Price of Gold”, which tells the story of a devastating mercury spill by the world’s richest gold mining corporation that transforms a quiet peasant village in Peru’s Andean mountains. The documentary will be presented at the office of Horizons of Friendship, located at 50 Covert Street (2nd Floor) in Cobourg. The series will run every Thursday until the end of August.
