Authors and Artists Come Together for Horizons of Friendship

Following on the popular successes of the last three years, A Writers & Friends Select Live Art Auction will once again be an important component of Horizons’ signature literary evening fundraiser to be held this year on Sunday November 9th at LeVan Hall, Trinity College School.

The generosity of Writers & Friends 2008 participating writers, Charlotte Gray, Richard Gwyn, Helen Humphreys, James Orbinski and Farley Mowat is complemented this year by donations from local artists and special supporters in this year’s Select Live Art Auction whose contributions will help to raise additional funds on behalf of Horizons partners in Central America and Mexico. See below (and graphic attachment) for information on art by Stephen Gilberry, Andrew Gregg, George Raab, Shelagh Stewart, Tony Urquhart and Arthur Manyengedzo, sponsored by Zim Art Studio as well as the much anticipated “A Week in the South”.

 - Stephen Gilberry, resident of Cobourg and artist whose work is exhibited widely. Influenced by travels and studies around the world, he enjoys working in abstract and impressionistic styles. - Andrew Gregg, head of art at Trinity College School and artist who is represented in collections in Canada and abroad. His painting “Petroglyphs and Pencils“, oil on board with found objects, 24″ X 36,”is designed to evoke thoughts about ancient tribal symbols. It is based on an actual petroglyph found at the Petroglyphs Provincial Park east of Peterborough.  Value $1200; reserve bid $800.

   - George Raab, resident of Millbrook, and printmaker. Renowned for his wilderness landscape etchings, he has held dozens of solo exhibitions and participated in over 100 group shows worldwide. “Last Light, First Frost” 40″ x 28″ is one of Raab’s “intaglio” prints, described by Raab as offering a “sense of the mystery of the wildlands we all need in order to better know ourselves.” Website: www.georgeraab.com Value $750. - Shelagh Stewart, resident of Cobourg and professor at Ryerson University, School of Fashion. An artist whose paintings and textile works hang in collection in Canada, the US, and the UK, she favours the “use of fashion images as icons of storytelling (where) the boundary between illustrating and painting has blurred and blended”. Her donation to Horizons is an oil painting “Paris 1962“, 36″X 24″. Value $1500.

- Tony Urquhart, resident of Stratford, Ontario and member of the Order of Canada. A pioneer of Canada’s abstract expressionism in the 50’s, he is an artist whose work is found at the AGO, the National Gallery, MOMA, the Victoria & Albert, etc. His works are recognized as combining “the surreal, the mythic and the symbolic”. His donation to Horizons is a pen & ink drawing on prepared paper, Amy’s Mausoleum. 21″X 17″.  Suggested value $1200; reserve bid. $800.

- ZimArt is once again donating a Shona Stone Sculpture, this year’s by Arthur Manyengedzo, featured artist and sculpture workshop leader at the Rice Lake Gallery. Owned and curated by Fran Fernley, Zim Art Studio only represents artists from Zimbabwe who are carving and finishing with hand tools. “Proud of My Culture” (h. 18″) is signed by its creator and is accompanied by an authentication certificate. Value $950; reserve bid $450.

- A much anticipated offering once more is a Week in the South, in the Aveyron district, France. An 18 th century farmhouse in the hamlet of La Pradines, the retreat is located in the Midi Pyrenees, near Toulouse. Value $ 850.

Writers & Friends Live Art Auction on Sunday November 9th will take place following readings and gourmet buffet, at approx. 7:45 pm. Auctioneer will be Dr. Paul Caldwell, Horizons of Friendship board member who is well known in the arts community of Northumberland. Bids will be final; payment may be made by cheque, cash, MasterCard or VISA to Horizons of Friendship. Gala Fundraising Evening in Port Hope 

Horizons of Friendship is pleased to announce that Writers & Friends will take place this year on Sunday, November 9th at LeVan Hall, Trinity College School, Port Hope.  

Contributors to Writers & Friends 2008 will include Charlotte Gray, one of Canada’s best known writers and biographers, and author of the recently published Nellie McClung.

Also participating is Dr. James Orbinski, author of Humanitarian Action in the 21st Century, President of Médecins sans Frontières in 1999 when it was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Writers Friends special guest will be Farley Mowat, Canada’s master storyteller and a founding contributor of Writers & Friends whose memoir Otherwise is being hailed as “a wondrous final achievement of a true titan”.

Writers & Friends organizers are delighted that Ian Brown, award- winning writer and radio and television host will be returning as master of ceremonies for Horizons 14th Annual Literary Evening.

Originating with the first Writers & Friends event in 1995 with founding contributors Farley and Claire Mowat and Ronald Wright, Horizons’ literary evenings have now attracted the support of over 65 authors including Giller winners Elizabeth Hay and Richard B. Wright as well as Anna Porter, Joseph Boyden, Camilla Gibb, Michael Crummey, M.G. Vassanji, Margaret MacMillan, Donna Morrissey, Paul Quarrington, Nino Ricci, and Jane Urquhart. Hundreds of loyal Writers & Friends supporters including artists, sponsors, and contributors have all helped put Horizons on the “arts” map of Canada. And thanks to the matching support of CIDA, Writers & Friends has now been able to raise over half a million dollars on behalf of impoverished communities in Central America and Mexico.

In addition to the much anticipated readings and book signings, Writers & Friends 2008 will include a question & answer session, gourmet buffet, music, and a grand silent auction and a Select Live Art Auction. Donations from well known artists will be featured including Andrew Gregg, George Raab, Tony Urquhart, Gundi Viviani and the Zim Art Studio of stone sculpture.

Request for Proposal: Donor Development Program

Horizons of Friendship is a federally-registered charity and international non-governmental organization (NGO), located in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada. Incorporated in 1973 the organization is committed to eliminating the root causes of poverty and injustice in Central America and Mexico (Mesoamerica) through the cooperation of people from the South and North.  Horizons of Friendship is a long-standing member of the international development community in Canada and is recognized for its outstanding work in rural development, human rights, gender equity, community health and education, and more recently innovative programs in HIV/AIDS prevention. Horizons of Friendship is supported by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) with matching funds from private and provincial foundations, unions, faith-based organizations and community groups, as well as individual supporters.

Project Description:

Horizons of Friendship is seeking a “hands-on” Donor Development contractor to provide donor database analysis of approximately 10,000 individuals to identify prospects for donor upgrade, major gift and planned giving approaches, and specialized donor acquisition strategies.  Following database analysis, the prospective contractor is expected to outline a detailed action plan to deliver additional program goals.

Project Deliverables:

1. Donor segmentation of existing database;

2. Identified prospects for the following: regular acquisition, potential for upgrade from annual to monthly, major gift and planned giving approaches;

3. Donor upgrade strategy and outline of tactics for implementation of #2 above (to include draft or expected estimates of project costs, timelines and expected results);

4. Initial and ongoing direct composition of donor recognition letters, appeals, and specialized direct donor approaches;

5. On-going stewardship of donor upgrade, major gift and planned giving programs;

6. Counsel and input on overall institutional communication program from a donor-focused perspective;

7. Outline of compensation, performance incentives, and measurable program results.

Qualifications/Criteria:

1. Demonstrated experience in fundraising, database analysis, and socially-responsible direct marketing;

2. Proven track record in donor development, planned giving, and major gift programs;

3. Peer-recognized qualifications: i.e. CFRE, CAGP or AFP designation and/or equivalent;

4. Experience in international development sector–specifically with CIDA-supported NGOs;

5. Strong knowledge of Constituent Relationship Management (CRM) software–ideally Sage Software or alternatives (i.e. Razor’s Edge, DonorPerfect, eTapestry or others.)

Process:

- Prospective candidates are invited to provide an “Expression of Interest” letter outlining their qualifications, past experience and standard consultant fees;

- Upon receipt of the former Horizons of Friendship will provide “Terms of Reference” and non-disclosure agreement for submission of a detailed proposal and project outline;

- Expressions of interest, resumes, curriculum vitae, and other supporting material are due by Oct 24, 2008 and can be submitted by email to prebolledo@horizons.ca. Please include “Donor Development RFP” in the subject heading of your email;
