Since 1973, it has raised close to $74-million from individuals and organizations across Canada for self-help projects that provide a viable alternative to poverty and injustice in the region. Projects are initiated by the communities themselves and address a variety of concerns: livelihoods, education, indigenous peoples and women’s rights, health, and the environment. Writers & Friends Port Hope now raises over $ 30,000 annually and is matched up to three to one by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). www.horizons.ca
