READ ON FOR MORE DETAILS ABOUT THE TOUR AND RAFFLE:

For our thirteen year, we are excited to offer an eclectic mix of homes and gardens situated in Cobourg and surrounding areas.  Enjoy refreshments, beverages, wine and snacks, while you wander through the homes and gardens on this year’s tour some of Northumberland’s most talented  musicians will perform throughout the afternoon. Enjoy beautiful surroundings while listening to the sounds of ancient music, classical ensembles, and folk favourites.

Every summer since 1998, Horizons of Friendship has organized its annual Homes, Gardens &  Music Tour to raise funds in support of community development projects in Central America and Mexico. Over the past ten years, this event has become a much-anticipated showcase of local heritage architecture, unique homes and gardens and local musical talent, and has raised over $100,000. This amount is matched up to three to one by the Canadian government through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).

The tour enables our local community to join efforts to support communities in need in the South through Horizon’s 22 partner organizations, who work tirelessly to combat extreme poverty and inequality in the region. With the important funds raised by the Homes, Gardens & Music Tour, Horizons of Friendship rovides impoverished communities with technical training, together with materials and equipment for diversifying and increasing crop production. Horizons is helping to equip and maintain community health clinics, strengthen women’s organizations that produce and sell crafts and food, and provide organizational skills to indigenous, rural, youth and women’s groups that facilitate their participation in local government.

Take a peek to some of the houses and gardens for this year tour:

Copy of 004

#1   Wicklow Cairn

Modern architecture and historic Cobourg  combine in this new Ontario Regency-styled cottage. From the “butler’s pantry” to the sunroom, the inspiring use of colours and tiles, drapery and furnishings, reflect today’s vibrant lifestyle. Note, too, the sense of neighbourhood created by the individual homes, the central park and the wandering streetscape in this cleverly planned community.

IMG_3124

# 2   The Farm Manager’s House (1850’s)

Once home to the farm     manager of the former      Dunganon Estate, this sprawling property still speaks to its original intent and design. Latticework and  greenery  create an enchanting courtyard connecting the home  to the former carriage house, which is now converted to a guest abode. Expansive grounds, an apple orchard, perennial gardens and a 1954 MG in the driveway complete the picture of perfection.

image012

#3   Hidden Rose Cottage

Hidden Rose Cottage introduces a moral compass to Northumberland architecture. Eco-friendly ideas are merged with an interior design that is completely accessible. Coupled with views of treetops, rockery, a fountain and  vegetable gardens, this lovely dwelling, tucked into the landscape, truly strikes a balance    between aesthetics and conscientiousness.

IMG_3156

#4   Castle Hill Manor (1850’s)

With Regency Period grandeur, the stunning Castle Hill Manor emerges from thick stands of towering, ancient trees. Sweeping views of Lake Ontario are available from nearly any vantage point in the living or dining rooms. Visitors may imagine Gatsby-like garden parties under the flowering catalpa tree, and enjoy the owner’s antique tin collection and art  studio.

#5   Field Stone Farm (1867)

This large stone home features an original       portico, historic barn, tennis court, six acres of apple orchards and 11 acres of pasture. Fieldstone was built using stone and timber found on the property by Scottish stonemasons, who constructed six other nearby properties. They incorporated much of their old-world craftsmanship and strength into this unique home. English-style courtyard gardens and floating floral designs    enhance an attractive pool, carefully set within a beautiful natural setting.

#6   Willow and Wildwood

This award-winning garden is the result of 25 years of labour. Its undulating landscape produces the visual effect of merging seamlessly into Lake Ontario and the horizon beyond. Carefully contrived scenes are subtle yet powerful. Their beauty and tranquility is reminiscent of fantastical themes in the magical childhood story, “Wind in the Willows.”

IMG_3113

#7   La maison des jardins

This impressive garden epitomizes expertise. A large variety of native and imported plants create appealing textures, and lend themselves to a variety of pleasing vignettes. Woodland nooks, a dry-stone wall, vibrant colours, and playful ornaments are  scattered creatively throughout. Seating can be found in secret corners and crannies, among vines, shrubs, and perennials.

This year’s featured homes and gardens are:

 1.   Doll’s Home and Garden (c.1975)

This gracious bungalow located on the outskirts of the village of Baltimore is owned by an avid gardener.  Extensively renovated over the years, the home now has an open concept that interacts seamlessly with the outdoor living area.  Enjoy the owner’s large collection of porcelain dolls, several of which date from her childhood.  The expansive owner-designed gardens are an inspiring combination of familiar and unusual perennials which surround the house, the gazebo and the dry-stone fountain.

2.   Gidget’s Getaway (c. 1988)

The home owners and their Jack Russell terrier “Gidget” have recently endured extensive renovations to this twenty-year-old home, to suit their empty-nest lifestyle. The revamped space features a distinctive fireplace in the re-located dining room, and a new gourmet kitchen, with an unusual sink, designed for entertaining.  The garden is a well-established and soothing oasis filled with perennials and semi-tropical plants.

3.   Monk’s Cove Modern (1977)

Because these original owners have enjoyed their quiet lakeside neighbourhood of Monk’s Cove, they have updated and expanded their house over the years. The cul-du-sac’s mature trees along with the home’s Japanese Maple and Climbing Hydrangea greet the visitor. Indoors, the house features a dramatic use of colour and a gorgeous newly renovated kitchen. Outside is a two tiered deck with a hot tub, from which the owners can enjoy their picturesque garden.

4.   Captain Wallace’s House (c.1850)

Built by Captain Patrick Wallace who went on to establish an industrial empire including Canada’s largest woolen mill nearby, this home features restorations and furnishings that reflect its Victorian origins. The staircase from the gracious north entrance is surrounded by a 360-degree gallery on the second floor.  Renovations have created a great-room        overlooking the spacious lawn, pool and garden which reflects the owners’ pleasure in casual, contemporary living and entertaining year round.

5.   Reproduction Victorian Townhouse (2007)

This sunny cottage is a modern Victorian home built on one of Cobourg’s most historic streets. The challenging always-sunny south garden features an interesting array of plants and shrubs, while the airy interior of the home houses some beautiful pieces of Canadian and European art. The builder has paid close attention to Victorian detailing, especially its well-crafted staircase, and combined it with all the modern conveniences to create this charming home.

6.   Hough Cottage (1867)

cottageOne of the oldest homes on College Street, this home was built by Dr. Henry Hough in 1867. A unique variation of the Ontario Cottage, it is distinguished by two projecting bays, its fine use of wooden siding, and of course, its beautiful gardens. Decorated with artifacts from the owners’ travels abroad, this garden haven is home to a variety of perennials, scented viburnums and clematis, and features a “Peace Pole”, one of a few scattered throughout the world.

7.   Henley House (c. 1880)

Once the home of shoe store proprietor John Henley in the 1930’s to 1950’s, this home has gracefully evolved into a modern home for a large family. It features lavish exterior details, from the windows to the peak of the roof. Inside, the original design is well-respected while including a two-storey rear addition and an interesting chef’s kitchen. The garden that consists of curving raised beds for shrubs and annuals is designed for relaxation and entertainment.

8.   Judges House (1856)

Named for the four judges that have lived here, this elegant home has a fascinating history in Cobourg’s annals. It was built in the Regency Style, with extensive verandahs and French doors which keep the home cool in the summer. Winter warmth was originally derived from the home’s six fireplaces. The front gardens lean towards traditional formality, while the rear garden is more relaxed, with a kitchen garden to provide a steady summertime source of organic herbs and vegetables.

 The Elegant Homes and Gardens

1. Silver Birch home and garden

Sunshine-yellow and rose-red are the cheerful inspirations for the colour scheme in this suburban home in Cobourg where the owner wanted to bring her garden indoors. French doors and the palladian windows connect the interior to the garden which features an elegant stand of silver birches, perennials, annuals and the owner’s favourite, roses. Enjoy a rare sighting of a fully restored 1970 Alfa Romeo round-tailed Spider.

2. Urban Contemporary home and terrace

East meets West in this eclectically styled row home, where Asian and Western inspired art display the owners’ diverse interests and tastes. The contemporary and urban atmosphere of this home may feel like New York City, but it is located somewhere better, Cobourg’s prized harbor front!

 3. Turn of Two Centuries home and garden  (1906)

This property features a Century home transformed into an oasis of light and tranquility in Cobourg’s busy beach-front area. Built in 1906, the front of the house retains its original façade, but an ingenious addition both preserves the original features and introduces modern luxury, retaining the themes and ambiance of a historical home.

4. Garden Retreat

Enjoy an extensive downtown garden that has been lovingly restored from a vine-choked wilderness to a very personal and whimsical retreat. Curved beds contain a wealth of perennials and shrubs. Hidden among them are found artifacts and iron work. This garden is a treat for the senses, and will leave you inspired to reinvent or revitalize an outdoor getaway in your own backyard.

5. A fisherman’s cottage and garden (mid 1800s)

A picturesque artist’s cottage and garden located in one of Cobourg’s oldest lakeside neighbourhoods. Enveloped by a white picket fence, this mid 1800s two storey home exudes period charm. A wrap around veranda invites you to lounge with a cup of tea and enjoy the outdoor delights that the beautiful garden and surrounding “village” homes have to offer.

6. Miramichi Farm

A tree-lined drive and breezeway lead the visitor to a courtyard surrounded by a horseshoe shaped residence with strong architectural lines that are mirrored in the design of the gardens. A terraced garden faces south and features a panoramic view of Northumberland hills and Lake Ontario. Also featured in the southern garden is a Celtic cross motif, scythed into a hay field where bobolinks nest.

7. Scott’s Barn (1924), gardens and lavender field

A trip to Scott’s Barn presents a wealth of visual experiences, including a restored barn, a French potager, a dry river bed garden with rare trees, a Quebec style cottage and a one acre landscaped pond. A charming lavender field gently perfumes the property, and transports the visitor to the French countryside.

8. Reproduction regency farmhouse and garden

A modern reproduction of a Regency farmhouse, featuring old charms and modern conveniences. The home has both back and front porches that offer fantastic views of Northumberland’s rolling hills. This view can also be enjoyed from the great room that was designed for family get-togethers. Following this family-centred theme, the garden features a delightful children’s play house complete with its own wisteria-draped pergola, constructed by a loving grandparent, homes for the grandchildren’s rabbits and English game chickens, and a small orchard and vegetable garden.

The Musicians

Some of Northumberland’s most talented musicians will perform in our Homes and Gardens throughout the afternoon. Enjoy beautiful surroundings while listening to the sounds of jazz duos, ancient music, classical   ensembles, Celtic tunes, and folk favourites.

A few of the participating musicians are listed. We acknowledge their contribution with thanks:

Horizons 7th Annual Homes, Gardens & Music Tour.

Join us for Northumberland’s 7th midsummer treat for the senses!
It’s a house tour, garden stroll and mini music festival all rolled into one!

Enjoy concerts throughout the afternoon, light refreshments and a glass of wine on this annual visit to some fascinating residences in the Cobourg and Grafton area. Heritage landmarks, homes with a view and gardens aplenty!

1)The Cedars

Down the winding lane, through the woods and past the coachhouse, emerges a Cobourg classic in simple Georgian style with Italianate details. With its wide verandah and expanse of lawn overlooking the lake, it is the quintessential summer home of the 1880’s.

2) Victoria View

The French villa style home, built in 1874, once served as the office of a popular Cobourg physician. Metal crown mouldings, beveled etched glass doors, expansive front verandah and wide board pine floors are among the features of this distinctive home, now a B&B.

3) A Blake Street Garden

A mere three years old, the garden reflects the principles of scale and proportion, its design complementing its surroundings. Serpentine grassy paths curve around flower beds planted informally with shrubs, bulbs, perennials and annuals all providing colour and seduction.

4) Reynar House, 1876

An elegant Italianate home built as a wedding present from the bride’s parents for Ida Hayden and Alfred Reynar, professor of English at Victoria College on University Ave., (prior to its 1892 relocation to Toronto). Their descendant Miss Josephine Reynar, lived in the house until 1980.
5) Hayden House

This Gothic Villa style home was built in 1871 on one of Cobourg’s finest streets. It was expanded in 1884 by its new owner, a Montreal heiress, who added fin de siecle flourishes such as the large curvaceous two tier porch, ionic columns and pilasters.

6) A Henry Street Garden

With boxwood hedge and wrought iron accents, this garden has been developed to enhance the setting of its Victorian residence. On an irregularly shaped lot, its quiet half graces a shady slope; the other blazes brilliant colour and texture in classic beds combining flowering shrubs and perennials.

7) The Tinney House, 1880

A “T-shaped structure consisting of a square shaped main house and one-storey wing on the south side” was originally a clapboard dwelling built by Cobourg carpenter Edward Tinney. In disrepair a century later, restoration and creative renovation have now given the house new life and lustre.

8) Gardens of 105 Old Danforth Rd. (1812 Antiques)

An early focus on structures, pathways and pond has produced a garden of character, variety and inspiration -for artists and for brides! Here, a shady Asian garden; there, a bright, colourful English style garden. And beyond the artistic ephemera are beds and borders containing both old favourites and newer exotic species.

9) Grover House

Home of one of the original 1799 settlers in Haldimand, John Grover, who also built the first Grafton Inn. The Loyalist architecture of this 1820’s house, one of the oldest in the village, is complemented by its classic garden. Sunny at its centre, it opens to a rediscovered rockery and a shady brook on its periphery.

10) Lakeridge Gardens

Up and over the rise of the hill, it’s a panorama – Lake Ontario and Northumberland Hills. A marvel emerges of hill gardens evolved from empty fields and over huge boulders excavated from the foundation of the house. Now raised beds, border gardens, ponds and waterfall captivate.

11) Cottage with door yard gardens
A creative reproduction of an 1840’s Grafton area worker’s cottage that is a juxtaposition of old and new. The interior’s modernized open concept floorplan is balanced by its paneled wainscoting. Outside, two traditional “dooryard” gardens are home to modern hybrids of old-fashioned garden favourites.
