Horizons of Friendship is delighted to announce that its Annual Literary Evening will take place on Sunday November 14th, at LeVan Hall, Trinity College School Port Hope.  

 “Writers & Friends” will mark its 16th year as Horizons’ signature fundraising event which since 1995 has featured contributions by over 110 outstanding Canadian authors. Readings, book signings and Q&A, live music, gourmet buffet, silent auction and live art auction are all part of Writers & Friends 2009 on behalf of Horizons programmes in Central America and Mexico. Watch for announcements on programme, tickets and early bird opportunities in coming weeks..

 We hope you will mark your calendar now for “Writers & Friends” “16th on the 14th”!.

Horizons of Friendship is the only Canadian charitable organization working exclusively in southern Mexico and Central America. Since its founding in 1973 by three volunteers from Northumberland, Horizons has worked with partners in the South on behalf of marginalized communities struggling to improve their living conditions and to access basic human rights of health, education and livelihood. Horizons also supports regional programmes which address the growing problem of HIV/AIDS and violence against women.  Writers & Friends, originating in Port Hope in 1995 with the support of Farley and Claire Mowat and Ronald Wright now includes Writers & Friends Kingston.  Almost three quarters ahalf a million dollars has been raised by Writers & Friends and is matched up to three to one by the Canadian International Development Agency.  Authors, Musicians and Artists Join Supporters in Horizons’ Sold Out Benefit April 11th 

Kingston Friends of Horizons are delighted to announce that tickets are now sold out for this year’s Writers & Friends at Kingston City Hall. It’s Horizons’ 14th annual fundraising gala in Kingston, and for those lucky enough to have tickets, it will be a memorable afternoon with outstanding authors Ian Brown, Linden MacIntyre, Erna Paris and Lawrence Scanlan and special musical guest Sarah Harmer.

Visual artists as well are contributing to Horizons Writers & Friends Silent Auction.  (See poster attached).  Oils by artists Su Sheedy and Sharon Thompson will join pieces by metal artist Maggie Hogan, glass artist Laura Donefer, potter Tim de Rose and two authenticated handcoloured 19c. W.H. Bartlett lithographs. A special offering is A Week in Provence in 2011, a stay in a hill top village 17th century stone house northwest of Avignon.  Other donations from community supporters include golf with maestro Glen Fast at Smuggler’s Den, a fall weekend in old Montreal, a guided birding expedition, tickets to the new COC opera “Nixon in China”. Also featured will be donations of gift certificates, services and select baskets of Central American art and craft.

Linden MacIntyre, recipient of Canada’s major fiction prize, The Scotiabank Giller award for his novel The Bishop’s Man.  The nine- time Gemini- winning broadcast journalist and CBC host of the Fifth Estate  is also author of the memoir Causeway: A Passage from Innocence, a portrait of a vanishing way of life  in Cape Breton.     

Paris Erna

Erna Paris is a writer- historian and recipient of many national and international writing awards.  Her book Long Shadows won the Pearson Writers’ Trust and the Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing. Her latest book is The Sun Climbs Slow: The International Criminal Court and the Struggle for Justice.

Larry Scanlan

Lawrence Scanlan is an award- winning Kingston based journalist. He is author or co- author of fourteen books including the best selling The Man Who Listens to Horses and this spring will publish, A Year of Living Generously: Dispatches from the Front Lines of Philanthropy. Larry is a long time supporter of Horizons and contributor to Writers & Friends.

Sarah Harmer

Returning for her second Horizons benefit afternoon as musical contributor is one of Canada’s favourite singer – songwriters and an environmental activist, Sarah Harmer. Writers & Friends welcomes as master of ceremonies the novelist, editor and driving force behind Kingston’s WritersFest- Merilyn Simonds.

Over $ 27,000 is raised annually by Writers & Friends and is matched up to three to one for Horizons by CIDA (Canadian International Development Agency). Projects assist communities now even more marginalized by the current economic climate and yet struggling, resiliently and creatively, to improve their living conditions and access health, education, citizen participation and sustainable development. Horizons also supports regional projects that address the growing problem of HIV/AIDS and violence against women. With your support, Horizons of Friendship can continue to make a difference.

Outstanding Artists join Acclaimed Authors for Annual Writers & Friends

 On Sunday November 15, Governor General’s award winner Miriam Toews and internationally renowned novelist historian Ronald Wright will be just two of the featured artists contributing to this year’s special 15th Annual Writers & Friends evening of readings, music, gourmet buffet and select auctions at Trinity College School on behalf of Horizons of Friendship. Authors of some of Canada’s most engaging best sellers (A Complicated Kindness, The Flying Troutmans and A Short History of Progress, What is America)  they will join two of the country’s most respected journalists, foreign correspondent, editor and filmmaker Sally Armstrong, author of Bitter Roots and Tender Shoots, The Uncertain Fate of Women in Afghanistan and Ian Brown, Globe & Mail feature writer and author of the poignant memoir The Boy in the Moon: A Father’s Search for His Disabled Son.

Horizons of Friendship is delighted to announce that the generosity of  Writers & Friends 2009  participating writers,  is complemented this year by donations from outstanding visual artists in this year’s Select Live Art Auction whose works will help to raise additional funds on behalf of Horizons partners in Central America and Mexico. Among the contributions is Evening Pacific a serigraph by Ron Bolt, one of Canada’s finest living artists, a resident of Northumberland, widely known and collected throughout the world for his shows and exhibitions over the last forty years, and a longtime supporter of Horizons. PIXELS a work in acrylic and crayon on canvas, has been donated by Alice Teichert, artist of visual poetry born in Paris, whose studio is now in Port Hope and who has exhibited in France, Switzerland, and Australia. ZimArt Rice Lake Gallery is donating  a Shona Sculpture of Cobalt stone by artist Singi Chihota. Donations also include a watercolour by Rosemary Freeman, “Alaska Shoreline”; a one of a kind topaz, crystal and silver necklace by Jacqueline Curelly and Kendra Simmons; and a photograph by Mary Talbot “Memories of Spring II”. To preview these art works and to see photos of  “Terralta”, a condo in Bucerias, Mexico, that has been donated for two weeks stay, a Public Viewing will take place Thursday November 12 noon to 5 pm at the new Furby House Loft, 65 Walton Street. Everyone is welcome.

A Writers & Friends Select Live Art Auction will again be an important component of Horizons’ signature literary evening fundraiser, on Sunday November 15th at Trinity College School. The generosity of Writers & Friends participating writers, Sally Armstrong, Ian Brown, Miriam Toews and Ron Wright  is complemented by donations from these local artists and supporters. Writers & Friends Live Art Auction proceeds support Horizons partners in Central America and Mexico.

Ron Bolt, resident of Cobourg and widely known and collected throughout world for his shows and exhibitions. He is a longtime supporter of Horizons of Friendship.  Serigraph prints by Ron Bolt are now pulled in smaller edition runs and with many more colours.  Each colour or blend of colours requires separate colour separations. In Evening Pacific, 14/ 29, pulled in August 2008, each separation was pulled 29 times. Value $ 1100; reserve $ 500. Ron is represented by A.K. Collings Gallery: www.akcollings.com.

Singi Chihota, 2009 artist in residence at Zim Art Rice Lake Gallery, works from his home studio in Chitungwiz, Zimabawe.  Leader of three successful workshops at Zim Art, his work is found in collections in Germany, Holland, USA, UK and South Africa.  His Contemplating My Future, h. 22” in hand carved cobalt stone is ZimArt’s 2009 Shona sculpture donation to Writers &Friends. Rosemary Freeman, resident of Northumberland County, teacher and proprietor for many years of the Gallery Art School. Primarily a water colourist, Rosemary also works in pen and ink with a wide portfolio, from historic homes, public architecture and nostalgia pieces to portraits of wildlife. “Recently “her works carry you across Canada in reflective impressions of her visual experiences.”  Her Alaska Shoreline, 38”x 31” is valued at $ 950; reserve bid $ 450. Kendra Simmons and Jacqueline Currelly, jeweller and designer, respectively, of a one of a kind necklace made up of Smoky Quartz , also known as Smoky Topaz, and rock crystal beads. The pendant is hand made sterling silver set with facetted Smoky Quartz. The necklace is a creative joint effort by “Semi Precious” wearable art by Jacqueline Currelly and “Chatwood and Simmons” antique and estate jewellery dealers at Antiques on Queen owned by Kendra Simmons. Mary Talbot, photographer, is stirred by patterns, shapes, colours, and textures.  Using slide film, she often portrays subjects in a non-representational manner. Primarily self-taught, Mary has also studied with Canada’s distinguished photographer Freeman Patterson, and with André Gallant and Richard Martin.  She makes presentations in southern Ontario, exhibits, judges competitions, and conducts photography workshops.  Memories of Spring II, 19”X 23”framed, suggested value $ 500; reserve $ 200. Alice Teichert, artist of abstract painting and visual poetry, born in Paris, educated in Brussels, New York and Toronto.  She now has a studio in Port Hope. Teichert’s work is rooted in her study of music, philosophy, visual poetry, visual arts and printmaking. Teichert has participated in over 24 solo exhibitions and 50 group exhibitions spanning France, Canada, Switzerland and Australia. Her work is held in private and public collections worldwide. Following on the popular successes of the last three years, A Writers & Friends Select Live Art Auction will once again be an important component of Horizons’ signature literary evening fundraiser to be held this year on Sunday November 9th at LeVan Hall, Trinity College School.

The generosity of Writers & Friends 2008 participating writers, Charlotte Gray, Richard Gwyn, Helen Humphreys, James Orbinski and Farley Mowat is complemented this year by donations from local artists and special supporters in this year’s Select Live Art Auction whose contributions will help to raise additional funds on behalf of Horizons partners in Central America and Mexico.  - Stephen Gilberry, resident of Cobourg and artist whose work is exhibited widely. Influenced by travels and studies around the world, he enjoys working in abstract and impressionistic styles. - Andrew Gregg, head of art at Trinity College School and artist who is represented in collections in Canada and abroad. His painting “Petroglyphs and Pencils“, oil on board with found objects, 24″ X 36,”is designed to evoke thoughts about ancient tribal symbols. It is based on an actual petroglyph found at the Petroglyphs Provincial Park east of Peterborough.  Value $1200; reserve bid $800.

   - George Raab, resident of Millbrook, and printmaker. Renowned for his wilderness landscape etchings, he has held dozens of solo exhibitions and participated in over 100 group shows worldwide. “Last Light, First Frost” 40″ x 28″ is one of Raab’s “intaglio” prints, described by Raab as offering a “sense of the mystery of the wildlands we all need in order to better know ourselves.” Website: www.georgeraab.com Value $750. - Shelagh Stewart, resident of Cobourg and professor at Ryerson University, School of Fashion. An artist whose paintings and textile works hang in collection in Canada, the US, and the UK, she favours the “use of fashion images as icons of storytelling (where) the boundary between illustrating and painting has blurred and blended”. Her donation to Horizons is an oil painting “Paris 1962“, 36″X 24″. Value $1500.

- Tony Urquhart, resident of Stratford, Ontario and member of the Order of Canada. A pioneer of Canada’s abstract expressionism in the 50’s, he is an artist whose work is found at the AGO, the National Gallery, MOMA, the Victoria & Albert, etc. His works are recognized as combining “the surreal, the mythic and the symbolic”. His donation to Horizons is a pen & ink drawing on prepared paper, Amy’s Mausoleum. 21″X 17″.  Suggested value $1200; reserve bid. $800.

- ZimArt is once again donating a Shona Stone Sculpture, this year’s by Arthur Manyengedzo, featured artist and sculpture workshop leader at the Rice Lake Gallery. Owned and curated by Fran Fernley, Zim Art Studio only represents artists from Zimbabwe who are carving and finishing with hand tools. “Proud of My Culture” (h. 18″) is signed by its creator and is accompanied by an authentication certificate. Value $950; reserve bid $450.

- A much anticipated offering once more is a Week in the South, in the Aveyron district, France. An 18 th century farmhouse in the hamlet of La Pradines, the retreat is located in the Midi Pyrenees, near Toulouse. Value $ 850.

Writers & Friends Live Art Auction on Sunday November 9th will take place following readings and gourmet buffet, at approx. 7:45 pm. Auctioneer will be Dr. Paul Caldwell, Horizons of Friendship board member who is well known in the arts community of Northumberland. Bids will be final; payment may be made by cheque, cash, MasterCard or VISA to Horizons of Friendship.
