1. Can I volunteer to work overseas or do an internship overseas with Horizons?
Horizons is not a volunteer-sending agency, nor do we have offices overseas; rather, we work with local organizations. Several Canadian agencies do send volunteers and interns overseas; visit the websites of the Canadian Council for International Cooperation (CCIC) to find out which of their members offer this. For Canadians under 30, the federal government also offers youth internships abroad. Visit the Youth Employment Strategy’s website for more information.

2. Can I volunteer with Horizons?
Horizons always welcomes new volunteers. There are opportunities to volunteer in our Thrift Shop, on the event committees for Homes and Gardens or Writers and Friends, and in our Cobourg office providing administrative support. We also welcome coop students with an interest in international development who are looking to complete their 40 hours of work.

3. Can I visit Horizons-supported projects in other countries?
We ocassionally receive this type of request and, although it is never intended as such, each introduction is an imposition on our overseas colleagues. They assume an obligation to offer hospitality and time. Indeed, most of these organizations are small and, like Horizons and do not have the capacity nor the infrastructure to deal with volunteers or other visitors in such a way that would make the experience meaningful. Therefore, we tend not to arrange such meetings in most circumstances. For those interested in meeting with our partners, we organize an exposure tour every February, which offer Canadians a chance to meet our partners and learn about the work that they do.

4. Do you have any job openings?
Horizons is not currently hiring. If a job posting becomes available, we will post this information on our site and on the CCIC site.

5. I live outside of Cobourg; how can I be involved with Horizons of Friendship?
There are a number of ways to be involved with Horizons of Friendship. One is to become a monthly donor and help support our partners’ projects overseas. If you are based in Kingston, you can join the Central American Solidarity Committee, which helps support Horizons initiatives, or join the Writers and Friends planning committee. Most of the members of our board of directors live outside the Cobourg area and you can apply when positions become available. Or start your own “Friends of Horizons” group in your city!

6. How can I find work in international development?
The CCIC lists current work opportunities in international development, both in Canada and abroad. Visit: www.ccic.ca/e/006/employment.shtml Another useful website for employment in the Canadian non-profit sector is Charity Village. For international postings, try DevJobs. If you are interested in working with a particular organization, visit its website as any job openings will be posted there.

7. Is Horizons a religious organization?
Horizons is a secular organization, though we are supported by and sometimes collaborate with several faith-based groups.

8. Is my donation tax-deductible?
Horizons of Friendship issues tax receipts for all donations received. Our charitable registration number is 11896 3461 RR0001.

9. May I see your financial statements?
A summary version of our financial statements may be found in our Annual Report, which we send each spring to our supporters as part of our newsletter. It is one of many ways in which we are accountable to the Canadian public and to our donors.

10. Where can I find a copy of your bi-annual newsletter?
You can view our newsletter electronically on our web site, send us a request at info@horizons.ca for us to send you a PDF version or you can pick up a copy from our office or thrift shops.

11. Can I sign up to receive information through email?
Yes. Please make your request to info@horizons.ca
