planned-giving.jpgTo give to others is one of the most important and satisfying contributions anyone can make during their life. Whether we do it for our family, a friend, others in our community or the less fortunate of the world, to donate money (or to offer ourselves as volunteers) is a wonderful gift.

Many of us donate regularly to charities. Giving in this way provides a great sense of personal satisfaction. There is also another important advantage. Charitable donations can offer significant tax benefits as well. When you donate to a federally-registered charity such as Horizons of Friendship, you receive tax credits that can significantly lower the amount of taxes you pay.

While it is important to give on a regular basis, there are many factors to consider when deciding if you should make a donation, especially a major one. Some donors, wishing to see how their gift is used and seeking to avoid possible probate fees or estate problems, opt to give during their lifetime. Others prefer to make a planned gift through a bequest in their will or purchase charitable life insurance, as this allows them to maintain full control of their assets throughout their life.

Whatever route you choose, it is important to plan carefully, taking into account all aspect of your personal finances. If you have any questions, it is wise to consult with your professional advisor (lawyer, accountant or certified financial planner) to assist you in minimizing the amount of taxes you will owe while maximizing your gift.

Become a Volunteer

Horizons of Friendship couldn’t carry on with its work to end poverty and injustice in Mesoamerica without the help of its team of over 50 volunteers. Here’s how you can join them.

Throughout the year, our Thrift and Treasure Shops are always looking for volunteers to sort and organize donations behind the scenes or to work up front in the store.

Our three signature fundraising events – Writers and Friends Kingston in the Spring, Writers and Friends Port Hope in the Fall, and Homes, Gardens and Music Cobourg in the Summer – are organized and executed with the dedication and hard work of volunteer committees. Members of the committee work on all aspects of event planning, from the initial publicity to logistics and hosting duties.

For those interested in learning more about the daily functions of Horizons’ office, there are opportunities to volunteer with the Community Outreach Program or as office and administrative support. The work available varies throughout the year. Students looking to meet their community service hours or co-op placement requirements are also encouraged to apply.

If you’re interested in volunteering in any of the above areas, please download the volunteer form and return the completed form by post to our mailing address.
