It provides an alternative for farmers and artisans from the developing world to sell their products to importers at a better price than in the regular markets. At a more fundamental level, fair trade is about creating sustainable solutions to poverty and social injustice, by securing rights and offering better trading conditions to marginalized producers and workers.
