Guatemala produces 30% of the wealth in Central America. The richest 20% of households control 60% of the wealth, while the poorest 20% have 2.9% of the country’s income. This unfair balance of assets makes Guatemala’s economy one of the most unequal in the world.

Our Work in Guatemala
We have worked with local organizations in Guatemala since 1976. Currently, our four partners in the country are grassroots Mayan-led organizations that work directly with impoverished rural Mayan communities (principally Maya K’iche, Mam and Kaqchikel) in the western highlands. Much of their work is aimed at pressing for compliance with the 1996 Peace Accords in a number of areas: the promotion of reforms to the national health care system and intercultural bilingual education.
