Though parts of Mexico are considered as “highly developed”, poverty is widespread in many regions of the country, especially in the southern states where the majority of the population is Indigenous. In the state of Chiapas, over 76 per cent of the population live below the poverty line.
Our Work in Mexico
Horizons’ work in Mexico began in the early 1980’s with support provided to Guatemalan refugees living in southern Mexico and subsequently to victims of the 1985 earthquake. Currently, our program is focused exclusively in Chiapas — acknowledged by the Mexican government as its poorest state — where our partners are providing assistance in sustainable agriculture and marketing techniques to increase the income of Indigenous communities.
