WHAT YOU'RE SUPPORTING

In Totonicapán, Guatemala, Indigenous, traditional midwives often walk two to three hours to reach their patients in the rural highlands. Day or night, rain or shine, they walk these long unmarked routes between communities to reach pregnant women and new mothers in need of health care. Traditional midwives are the most accessible and acceptable maternal and child health care providers for Indigenous families in rural Guatemala, attending 69% of births throughout the country. However, they still remain unrecognized and unpaid by the Public Health system despite the integral role they play in health care for the most marginalized population in the country. Horizons’ Maternal, Newborn and Child Health: Transforming Indigenous Lives” (MNCH) project seeks to provide more than 1,000 midwives throughout Totonicapán with education and equipment to enhance their service delivery while recognizing their cultural traditions and experience.
